Imām Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān
His full name is Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf az-Zuhrī al-Madanī, born in the 20s A.H.
His mother is Tumāḍir bint al-Aṣbagh ibn ʿAmr, who witnessed the life of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
He was nursed by Umm Kulthūm [bint Abibakr] (raḍi Allāhu ʿanhā), thus earning the privilege of being the foster nephew of ʿĀishah (raḍi Allāhu ʿanhā).
There are three views regarding his name:
Some have stated that his name was ʿAbdullāh, and Imām Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr stated, “It is the most correct according to the experts in genealogy.”
Others have stated that his name was Ismāʿīl,
and the third view is that his name was his teknonym (i.e. Abū Salamah).
He narrated ḥadīth from some Ṣaḥābah such as Abū Hurayrah, ʿĀʾishah, Ibn ʿUmar, Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh and many others (raḍī Allāhu ʿanhum).
He also narrated from his father, albeit minimally due to his young age.
From Abū Hurayrah (raḍī Allāhu ʿanh), he is reported to have narrated 1228 aḥādīth based on al- Kutub at-Tisʿah.
Abū Salamah had the practice of applying dye (henna). Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdullāh mentioned, ‘Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān approached us in Basra during the reign of Bishr ibn Marwān, he was a radiant personality, it was as though his face was a shining coin.’
Allāmah Ibn al-Ḥadhdhāʾ stated regarding his date of demise: ‘Abū Salamah passed away in the year 94 (AH) at the age of 72.’ May Allāh endow His everlasting favours upon him, āmīn.
